Waterproof fabric can be divided into three categories according to processing methods: high-density fabrics, coated fabrics and laminated fabrics.

High-density waterproof fabric refers to high-density (ultra-high-density) woven fabric with waterproof and moisture permeability, which is made of combed high-count cotton yarn or superfine (or high-shrinkage) synthetic fiber. This process is difficult to produce, dyeing and finishing is difficult, and cannot achieve high water resistance, but its superior hand feeling, good moisture permeability and windproof and heat preservation make it still occupy a place in the market.

Coated waterproof fabric is a fabric with waterproof and moisture permeability function, which is made by uniformly coating a high polymer on the surface of the fabric and forming a film. It can be divided into the microporous coating and nonporous hydrophilic coating.

Laminated waterproof fabric is a fabric with waterproof and moisture permeable function, which is made by laminating a film with waterproof and moisture permeable function with the fabric. It can be divided into three types: microporous film, nonporous hydrophilic film and laminated fabric with microporous film and nonporous hydrophilic film. It is the main development direction of outdoor sports waterproof and moisture-permeable fabric at present.

Coated fabrics and laminated fabrics occupy a dominant position in the market because they can achieve high waterproof and moisture permeability, and can provide products of different grades (such as high waterproof, low moisture permeability, low waterproof, high moisture permeability, etc.) and different requirements (such as heat preservation, camouflage, flame retardant, etc.) as required.
